YOUR PLACE OR MINE

Personal coaching is a great way to enjoy learning yoga either on your own, with a partner or with a few friends.

If you are interested in a yoga holiday with me where you can also have personal coaching do get in touch to discuss fairlie@freeingthebody.com

In the classes we work in an unhurried way,  releasing muscles and untangling  joints to take tension out of the body and in this way inviting parts of the body that are seldom used to awaken and extend. Vanda Scaravelli's approach involves using a sense of gravity and allowing the breath to arrive and leave without restriction. Vanda believed yoga would be "accepted by the body when it is done without resistance."

After many more years than I care to remember of pounding wooden floors in the Gym in the pursuit of a fitter and healthier body, I have stumbled upon a regime so gentle yet so fulfilling that I have begun to doubt the benefit of such high intensive aerobic exercise. To me it is relaxing yet invigorating; it is calming yet empowering; it clears the mind of muddled thoughts and prepares you for the week ahead.                                Sue - Social Worker

This approach to yoga seeks to involve the whole body and a lot of time is spent making sure parts are not locked off  from the rest of the body and connections and openings are made throughout the whole body. It feels good and it can be fun too. Once you've tried it your body will tell you it wants to do more.

I have a deep ache in my back (mostly from lifting grandchildren) which does not ease with exercise or rest. Yoga with Fairlie encourages 'letting go' of the tension I build up and consequently I have been able to develop some new posture habits that take away the pain! If I do yoga regularly I find I am pain free.                                 Harriette South London Nov. 2009

Classes are suitable for any age, any level of fitness or stiffness!

I have attended many yoga classes for the best part of 20 years. Not only have the forms of yoga all been different but also each teacher brings their own style to the session.

After a lifetime of being a London cyclist, with repeated injuries from road traffic accidents, I've spent many years managing aches and pains. I  practised diligently and had regular treatments of either Osteopathy, Acupuncture, Shiatsu or Tuina but the pain was only ever palliated.

I have now been going to Fairlie's class for over a year and the difference is remarkable.

Only now do I understand that my yoga practice had fundamental limitations whilst it was about Doing. The emphasis that Fairlie so expertly guides us through is about Un-Doing. In other words Letting Go or Releasing. This sounds simple and obvious but it's not! It's the greatest challenge of the whole session.

Only now do I fully appreciate that physical pain is so often a 'holding on'; be it tension from fear, anxiety or even grief , however long-standing. Once I learnt to surrender the tension only then did I experience the freedom to stretch and bend for example.

I feel very indebted to Fairlie for teaching in such a different way.   She always gives each class member the necessary individualised attention with tremendous care and patience. My aches and pains are negligible and I recommend her whole-heartedly.

I used to have to go to Physiotherapy for a trapped nerve in my back and since doing Yoga with Fairlie weekly I have not needed to go. Moreover it has improved my golf swing .                                                                                                                Accountant South London

This yoga gives me the exercise I need, helps me retain suppleness and helps my breathing (I'm asthmatic). I feel I've had a good workout without overdoing things.

Fairlie teaches yoga in a disciplined but gentle manner. She takes care to ensure that everyone in the group is treated as an individual recognising that each student has differing abilities. Fairlie does not have a 'one fits all approach' so each student can feel confident their own needs are being considered. Fairlie's philosphy seems to be that the journey is as important as the destination. She doesn't ask her students to push his/her body to achieve yoga postions immediately. Her classes are not exercise classes but an opportunity to attune to the body, to think and prepare for the postures so that the body will relax and extend into the posture as a natural consequence of the thought and preparation. I have always enjoyed Fairlie's classes and take her guidence and advice into the outside world to help me combat the stresses and strains of modern day living.

By focussing on letting go physically, I've found this yoga practice deeply relaxing. It's given me a sense of peace as well as making me feel and look more toned. My feet in particular feel much more alive and I'm aware that I'm walking differently, more lightly. All this somehow affects my moods too. It's wonderful.
